COVID 19 has given us unprecedented times where for many, stress levels are at an all time high. We may be stressed about the fragility of our health and that of our loved ones, work or finances. TalkingPoint Therapy provides client specific Psychotherapy as one off appointments or longer term work.
Codependent Relationships
So many people live in codependent relationships.
- Being afraid of being abandoned so putting up with unhealthy relationships
- Being the go to person for everybody else’s problems
- Feeling selfish for not meeting the needs of others
- Put yourself down in order to lift others up
- Having self limiting or self sabotaging beliefs
Remember you are a human being not a human doing.
Today’s world needs compassionate, kind and empathic people however you need to receive it back in return. This concept is often difficult for people who are codependents because they are often in one sided relationships. This causes 2 problems
- You are separated from your true authentic self
- You are depriving the people you are sheltering the lessons they need to grow and learn from
You can only give so much before you start to suffer yourself and the need to be needed becomes embedded with the fear of being abandoned.
Steps to change
- Recognise what codependency look like in your life
- Work out where this has come from
- Set boundaries for yourself
- Resist the urge to fix or save
- Prioritise your own growth
The most common number of sessions that clients attend worldwide is just 1! 70% – 80% said that one session was enough given their current situation. As we come out of this pandemic TalkingPoint Therapy is looking to move to a more flexible approach and introducing “One at a Time Therapy” to work alongside longer term Psychotherapy. For more information about “One at a Time Therapy” contact us via our website contact page.
As we approach another step towards the easing of lockdown, I am working with clients on developing self compassion. By developing self compassion towards ourselves we can improve our mental health wellbeing. When you find yourself being critical of yourself try asking how a close friend or family member would say it to you. Reframe self criticism as self compassion and see how it changes your mental health wellbeing.
As we today start the roadmap to ending lockdown I will be working this week with clients on taking it one step at a time, and that if you move your body forward your mind will follow.
